Background Information

IMPORTANT: Please do not add this journal as a 'friend'. I understand this may be an inconvenience but I find that journals start looking dated when you see lots of strike outs on the 'friend of' list. I also believe that when one has 100 friends, one can't keep track of them all. I'd prefer to get to know a few special muses who won't need to see their names on my journal to know that I enjoy CR with them. My old journal, ladyofniflheim is currently being used as an OOC journal and you can add that if you wish. This RP journal follows on from my younger version of Hel, hagia_heir. The new titles for her journals provide something of a clean slate. I have taken the things I liked most from playing Hel, and have discarded whatever wasn't working. I am remaining more faithful to the original Norse mythology this time. There is an emphasis on the rawness of Jarnvidr's (or the Ironwood's) tribal culture over the glamour that is often associated with Death. Hel's relationship to her mother and to Jarnvidr are also themes I'd like to explore here. Those who have Marvel or MCU verses with me may continue building on our established CR in a separate verse. Please excuse the work in progress.

Timeline:

Journal from 1220 to the late 1500s: hagia_heir

9 January 1108: Born in Jarnvidr, Jotunheimr, to Angrboda and Loki on a chilly, but not especially bleak, winter's evening. The promise of approaching spring is in the air.

1220: A Norn prophecy is discovered. It will later throw Hel and her brothers, Fenris and Jormungandr into conflict with the Aesir. This takes place at around the same time that Snorri Sturluson's Poetic Edda is compiled.

1396: Hel is now the equivalent of a preteen child. As she and her brothers grow, Odin starts to fear that the prophecy may come true. He steals the children from their home, sending them to their respective prisons. Hel's is Niflheimr, those who have died on land of illness or of old age are admitted to this place. The drowned belong to Rán and the fallen in battle to Odin.

1397- late 1500s: In her early to mid teens. Hel comes to terms with her position as Death Goddess and develops into a serious young skessa (Icelandic term for giantesses or ogress). This is the period of enlightenment on Midgard. Her responsibilities as a ruler are spread among her servants so that she may study and mature. She learns a spell that allows her to leave her realm, in spirit if not in body. This is a form of astral projection. She travels and experiences new realms.

Journal from the 1600s onwards: hagiaofhelheim

1600s- mid 1800s: Reaches adulthood. Having learned the languages of the Nine Realms and some of the mysteries of her own realm, she starts to take on more responsibilities as a ruler. She names the city of the dead Helheimr and calls the underworld within Niflheimr, Niflhel. She starts her first romantic relationship with one of her long-time subjects, Dyaggvi a former mortal king. He soon becomes unhappy as her subordinate and she finds him demanding. The two separate amicably.

Mid 1800s to the present: A full fledged ruler of her realm, she does not visit Midgard as often as she used to. If she is found there, she'll be in the last remaining patches of wilderness or in quaint backwater towns. She is likely to engage in philosophical discussions, under the guise of a sweet brunette woman with an unassuming manner.

Quirks:

✠ Loves dark chocolate and cherry or mint ice cream. It keeps her coming back to those quaint family-owned ice cream shops on Midgard.
✠ Unsurprisingly she is a dog-lover. Her mother's tribe in Jarnvidr was known as the Wolf Clan, for many of their sons instinctively take on this shape. She also finds canines make her feel needed whereas cats treat her with the same indifference as the Aesir.
✠ Her favorite season is Autumn, it is not yet icy cold and the colours are beautiful. It's as if the environment puts on one final striking display before falling silent.
✠ She  hardly has the Gothic dress sense that many would expect of her. Hel likes earthy clothing made of natural fibers in neutral colours but her style s not consistent. She will wear comfortable and practical clothing most of the time and occasionally something elegant.
✠ She smells of moist soil rather than rotting flesh. She loves to wear burial spices and perfumes.
✠ Enjoys cooking. The food is usually magically conjured. While not as filling as 'true food', it is tastier. Sweet meats, and stews of unusual cold-weather herbs are often found on the table.
✠ Hel loves altering the look of her realm, changing weather patterns, time of day, seasons and landscapes at a whim. She can never make bright sunshine but it nonetheless, her blank canvas.
✠ She finds mortal fiction fascinating as it offers a constantly-shifting perspective of their world. Their imaginations are diverse and intriguing but she avoids angsty YA novels.  The dry wit of older British comedies, amuses her to no end.

Gylfaginning 34:

Yet more children had Loki. Angrboda was the name of a certain giantess in Jotunheimr, with whom Loki gat three children: one was Fenris-Wolf, the second Jormungandr--that is the Midgard Serpent--the third is Hel. But when the gods learned that this kindred was nourished in Jotunheimr, and when the gods perceived by prophecy that from this kindred great misfortune should befall them; and since it seemed to all that there was great prospect of ill--(first from the mother's blood, and yet worse from the father's)-then Allfather sent gods thither to take the children and bring them to him. When they came to him, straightway he cast the serpent into the deep sea, where he lies about all the land; and this serpent grew so greatly that he lies in the midst of the ocean encompassing all the land, and bites upon his own tail. Hel he cast into Niflheimr, and gave to her power over nine worlds, to apportion all abodes among those that were sent to her: that is, men dead of sickness or of old age. She has great possessions there; her walls are exceeding high and her gates great. Her hall is called Sleet-Cold; her dish, Hunger; Famine is her knife; Idler, her thrall; Sloven, her maidservant; Pit of Stumbling, her threshold, by which one enters; Disease, her bed; Gleaming Bale, her bed-hangings. She is half blue-black and half flesh-color (by which she is easily recognized), and very lowering and fierce.
